Position Overview:
The Chief Engineer is the head of the engineering department and holds complete responsibility for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all mechanical, electrical, propulsion, and auxiliary systems on board. This includes the oversight of ASD propulsion units, generators, deck machinery, and critical safety systems.
The ideal candidate must possess a strong technical background, practical problem-solving ability, and extensive experience managing engine room operations aboard tugboats or offshore support vessels.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering & Propulsion Systems Management
- Maintain and operate the main engines (typically medium-speed diesel), ASD propulsion units, and auxiliary systems including generators, compressors, pumps, and steering gear.
- Perform routine checks, troubleshooting, and repairs on all engine room machinery and equipment.
- Monitor engine performance parameters and ensure all systems are operating within safety limits.
Preventive Maintenance & Repairs
- Implement and oversee the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Coordinate and execute maintenance schedules for propulsion, fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems.
- Conduct fault diagnostics, part replacement, and minor overhauls as needed onboard.
- Prepare for and support dry dock or shipyard activities when scheduled.
Safety, Compliance & Environmental Control
- Ensure compliance with all relevant maritime regulations including SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag state engineering codes.
- Manage pollution prevention systems and record oily water separator operations and waste handling.
- Maintain records such as Oil Record Book (ORB), Engine Room Logbook, and maintenance reports.
- Ensure proper functioning of firefighting systems (CO2, extinguishers, fire pumps) and safety equipment within the engine room.
Crew Supervision & Management
- Lead, train, and supervise the engineering team including 2nd Engineer and Oiler.
- Assign daily maintenance tasks, monitor performance, and ensure discipline and safety in the engine room.
- Promote onboard knowledge-sharing and emergency preparedness.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate logs for engine hours, fuel consumption, lube oil analysis, maintenance activities, and spare parts inventory.
- Liaise with the Technical Superintendent for requisitions, parts ordering, and technical reports.
- Prepare handover notes for crew changes and provide condition assessments for major systems.
Candidate Specification:
Mandatory Certifications:
- STCW III/2 – Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited or limited based on engine power).
- STCW Basic Safety Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR).
- STCW Advanced Firefighting Certificate.
- Valid Seafarer’s Medical Certificate (MLC-compliant).
- GMDSS (not mandatory but advantageous).
- Valid International Passport & Seaman’s Book.
Experience:
- Minimum 4 years of sea time as Chief or 2nd Engineer on ASD tugboats, anchor handlers, or other offshore vessels.
- In-depth experience with:
- Diesel propulsion engines
- ASD propulsion systems (Schottel, Rolls-Royce, etc.)
- Generator systems and switchboards
- Hydraulic deck machinery
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of marine engine operations, fuel systems, HVAC, bilge/pumping systems, and automation controls.
- Familiarity with classification society standards and statutory survey requirements.
- Excellent record-keeping and reporting ability using computer-based or manual systems.
- High competency in managing engine room safety and emergency response procedures.
