Position Overview:
The Oiler is an essential member of the engine department, supporting the engineering team with the operation, cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance of all onboard machinery. The role ensures that mechanical systems run smoothly and that equipment is ready for all operational demands during towing, berthing, and offshore duties.
An ideal candidate should have a mechanical background, a strong safety mindset, and practical experience working in an engine room environment aboard a tugboat or offshore support vessel.
Key Responsibilities:
Machinery Operation Support
- Assist in monitoring and operating propulsion engines, generators, compressors, fuel systems, and auxiliary machinery.
- Check and top up lubricating oils, coolants, and hydraulic fluids as directed by the 2nd or Chief Engineer.
- Take readings of temperature, pressure, RPMs, and fluid levels at scheduled intervals and record in engine room logs.
Lubrication & Routine Maintenance
- Perform daily lubrication of moving parts such as bearings, pumps, valves, and motors to prevent wear and overheating.
- Assist in replacing filters, seals, and minor components as part of preventive maintenance.
- Clean strainers, check belts, and assist with fuel transfer or bunkering operations.
Engine Room Housekeeping
- Keep engine room, workshops, bilge areas, and storerooms clean, dry, and free of obstructions.
- Dispose of oily rags and waste materials safely and in accordance with MARPOL regulations.
- Maintain proper storage and labeling of tools, oils, and chemicals.
Safety & Emergency Response
- Understand emergency shutdown procedures and assist in engine room firefighting if required.
- Participate in safety drills and be familiar with muster stations, firefighting systems, and engine room escape routes.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times and comply with safety standards for confined spaces and hot surfaces.
Candidate Specification:
Mandatory Certifications:
- STCW III/4 – Engine Rating Certificate or Oiler Endorsement.
- STCW Basic Safety Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR).
- Seafarer’s Medical Certificate (MLC-compliant).
- Valid International Passport & Seaman’s Book.
Experience:
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in an engine room capacity on tugboats, offshore vessels, or cargo ships.
- Familiarity with:
- Diesel engines and auxiliary machinery
- Bilge and fuel transfer systems
- Watchkeeping and recording logs
- Emergency power systems
Knowledge & Skills:
- Sound understanding of lubrication schedules and machinery upkeep.
- Ability to use basic tools and assist in mechanical repairs.
- Working knowledge of engine room safety protocols and MARPOL pollution prevention measures.
- Basic understanding of engine room terminology and machinery layout.
